I have a long standing love affair with the Wireless.
My earliest memories are listening to the Wunschkonzert on the now defunct SDR (Süddeutscher Rundfunk). I remember, I was seven or eight, my dad assisting me with making a phone call to the station – only to hear a recorded message as it was way beyond their cut-off time – but still.
I remember listening to Enno Morricone’s theme from ‘Once Upon a Time in the West’ – it scared me to death. This is better explained once you know that the German title was ‘Spiel mir das Lied vom Tod’ (which translates into ‘Play me a song of death’)…
When I moved to London all these years ago I stumbled upon BBC Radio London (I think BBC London 94.9 it was called at the time) and my insomnia found a new home.
All these years later I’ve been working on that station as a paper reviewer and general musical-theatre-person guest gracing the airwaves with music and song from time to time over the years.
All this has lead to this: Riverside Radio. http://www.riversideradio.com There you can hear me co-presenting the Drive show with Carpet Martin, Monday, Tuesday & Friday from 4pm to 6pm.
