Dave Myers

I found out about Dave Myers’ passing while I was waiting in the queue to board my flight back to London from Gran Canaria. Immediately I burst into tears and had to be reminded by a fellow passenger that I was holding up the people behind me.

I followed the Hairy Bikers for more than ten years having fallen in love with their non-fuss way of cooking and travelling.

I never met him but, again, a death from cancer, taking the life of a human being at only 66, is a stark reminder of how precious life is.

A friend of mine who died of cancer when she was in her 30s wrote many songs about premature death. One line stating: “Und jung sterben meist nur die Guten.“ (The good ones mostly die young). Dave Myers certainly was a good one.

An Instagram post from the BBC’s Saturday Kitchen states:

“We are deeply saddened by the news of Dave’s passing.

Amanda Ross on behalf of the Saturday Kitchen team and teams from the many other Cactus shows made with Dave over the decades, including Hairy Bikers Food Tour of Britain, wants to express our deep sadness at his passing. He was a joy to work with, a brilliant entertainer and inspirational chef. Always a great team player, he made every show fun and funny, a wondertul colleague. Our thoughts are with dear Lili, his family, friends and of course, Si. We will be staging a celebration of Dave on Saturday Kitchen with Si once those closest to him have had time to process this devastating loss.”.

So, whether it’s someone in the limelight or not, please support someone dealing with Cancer in whichever way possible.

And be kind to each other and look after each other! Smile at the person you are holding a door open for. Let someone pass by you if they are in a hurry. Smile at the person who makes your coffee every morning! And maybe even talk to them. You could make their day!
